29/09/2005 MONTHLY REVIEW Derry City FC completed the first part of a potential treble in the Republic of Ireland by lifting the League Cup. Suppporters dreaming The Ulster-based club are still the only club in Ireland to win all three trophies in the same season back in 1989 and City supporters are now dreaming of more glory after Stephen Kenny's side won the League Cup by defeating University College Dublin FC 2-1 in the final, with an own goal from UCD midfield player Pat McWalter proving decisive. Last four Derry are also in the last four of the FAI Cup thanks to a 1-0 home win against Shamrock Rovers FC, veteran Gary Beckett scoring the goal, and are in the hunt for a Premier Division title as they are level on points at the top of the table with Cork City FC. But Derry boss Kenny is trying to play down talk of a clean sweep. "We're not thinking about winning three trophies; we're taking it game by game." Dolan returns Waterford United FC have brought former Cork City FC boss Pat Dolan back into football as they try to avoid relegation. Dolan has been out of the game since he was sacked by Cork in February, but he has linked up with Waterford to assist manager Brendan Rea. Waterford bottom United are bottom of the Premier Division table as their miserable run continues - the team have not won a league game since April, and they have scored in just one of their last five games, a 2-2 draw with fellow relegation strugglers Finn Harps FC. Shelbourne surge Shelbourne FC are making a late surge towards the top of the table and with five successive wins the champions have given themselves an outside chance of retaining their title. Some poor form in mid-season, when Shels took just three wins from 12 games, saw them written off as title contenders, and manager Pat Fenlon admitted that second place was their aim. Prolific Byrne In the last month Shels have clocked up wins against Bohemian FC (2-1), UCD (4-2), Shamrock Rovers (2-0), Waterford (5-0) and Finn Harps FC (3-0), Jason Byrne scoring nine times in five games.
