Foley Eyes Mid-summer Return

Saint Patrick's Athletic captain Colm Foley has spoken today about the setback he suffered in his attempts to return from a serious knee injury suffered mid-way through last season. Despite initial fears, he now expects to return about a year after the injury which occurred in Belfield Park.

When asked about the setback suffered in training he said, "I think it was my second full training session after months of a slow build up. I was playing in one of those games at the end of the session when one of the lads passed the ball out to me. When I went to control it, my whole knee buckled underneath me. It was quite painful and to be honest I feared the worst especially as it was on the same knee I had the operation on 6 months earlier."

Fortunately the injury does not appear to be as serious as was initially feared. Describing it, the centre half says it's "apparently not serious at all. I had a scan on it and went back to see the specialist. Everything looks fine and it appears that I just twisted it. It was just that my knee was still a bit weak."

It has been a setback to his recovery period though and when asked about the time-frame for a return, "I can start training again once the swelling goes down. I will need to wear a support for 2-3 weeks while training and then I'll be ready to play. Realistically it will be after the break in June before I'll be anywhere near the first team."

His eagerness to return to football is clear but he has been impressed by the Saints performances this term. "Last season was far more frustrating than this season. From the sidelines its always frustrating but its not as bad when the team is playing well and getting good results. But I am bursting to get back at the moment and its great to be back involved with the day to day training sessions."
