Result: Skonto 2 - Saints 1

St Patrick's Athletic claimed an away goal but were left to rue several missed opportunities as they went down 2-1 to Skonto Riga in their Europa League first-round qualifier, first-leg encounter in Latvia.

The Saints went ahead after 21 minutes when Aaron Greene fired the ball into the top corner as the Skonto defence stood off.

Despite having chances to double their lead, the Saints' defence was breached on 38 minutes when Arturs Karasausks' shot gave Brenda Clarke no chance and the sides went into half-time one-goal apiece.

The home side took the lead on 65 minutes catching the Saints on the counter attack and Vladislavs Gutkovskis firing home inside the box with Sean Hoare injured in the process.

It's all to play for the second leg with St Pat's knowing they must win if they are to progress to the second round.
