eircom League of Ireland leaders St Patrick’s Athletic will begin their latest attempt to break their FAI Cup hoodoo when they take on last year’s beaten finalists Longford Town in the third round next month.
Saints’ last Cup success came all the way back in 1961, with an extra-time defeat to Derry City in the 2006 final their closest call in recent times.
Longford, on the other hand, have been something of a Cup specialist, lifting the competition in 2003 and 2004 before last season’s run to the final.
However, the midlanders have been forced into a major rebuilding programme following relegation last year, with manager Alan Mathews and star players such as Dave Mooney and Kevin Doherty defecting to Premier Division sides.
