Gary Dempsey scored a brilliant late equaliser as St Patrick's Athletic came from 2-0 down to give themselves every chance of making the First Round (proper) of the UEFA Cup when the sides meet for the second leg of this second qualifying round tie at Richmond Park in a fortnight.
Saints' started well but found themselves two bad goals down inside the opening half hour.
Elfsborg striker Lasse Nilsson skipped past four defenders before he was apparently tripped by Damien Lynch to win a dubious penalty on 23 minutes. Stefan Ishizaki confidently sent Barry Ryan the wrong way from the spot kick.
Five minutes later poor defending cost Saints' another goal. Daniel Mobaeck was allowed to get away down the left to put over a low cross and right-back Johan Karlsson rifled the loose ball to the roof of the net from just a couple of yards out.
However, Saints' boss John McDonnell rallied his troops at the break and they hit back within 12 minutes of the second half when Mark Quigley won a penalty for a hand ball off Andreas Augustsson and duly slotted home the spot kick himself for his 19th goal of the season.
That gave Saints plenty of confidence and they grafted away to get their reward on 81 minutes.
Dempsey began the move, feeding Ryan Guy on wing and his cross was met by the in-rushing Dempsey who looped a header past Elfsborg keeper Johan Wiland.
