... Kerr then turned his attention to the League of Ireland and was appointed manager of St Patrick’s Athletic in 1985 while he resigned on principle from his role as Tuohy’s assistant after his mentor quit the international scene in 1986.

By then, Kerr’s role with St Pats was all consuming as he looked to turn the poor relation of Dublin’s ‘Big Four’ into title winning material.

On a shoestring budget, Pats carved out a reputation as serious title contenders winning the League in 1990 and 1996, while the foundations he laid at the Inchicore club (who, incidentally also returned to their spiritual Richmond Park home during his tenure) that helped the Saints continue to challenge long after his departure.
