Brian Gartland Named Assistant Coach

St Patrick's Athletic are delighted to welcome Brian Gartland as Assistant Coach.

The 37-year-old joins Stephen Kenny's staff following an 18-month spell as Head of Football Operations at Dundalk.

Gartland played under Kenny for five-and-a-half seasons at Oriel Park, winning four Premier Division titles, 2 FAI Cups and 2 League Cups, as well as featuring in the UEFA Europa League groups stages in 2016.

In total, Gartland won 5 Premier Division titles, 3 FAI Cups, 3 League Cups, 3 President's Cups and a Leinster Senior Cup during his 15-year playing career.

Since his retirement at the end of the 2022 season, and up to May of this year, Brian was Head of Football Operations at Dundalk, and had a brief spell as Caretaker Manager after Stephen O'Donnell's departure earlier this season.

Gartland said:

"It feels great to have joined St Pat's and I'm really excited for the challenge ahead. I've had a relationship with Stephen Kenny that goes back years and we were very successful together under his guidance. We get on well and always keep in contact and talk about the game.

The move to St Pat's came to fruition over the last week or so, we met and talked two or three times and we thought it was the right thing for me the join the coaching staff.

I'm joining a really talented Management Team, I've worked under Stephen for a number of years and played and coached against St Pat's teams that Sean O'Connor and Pat Jennings have been involved in, they are both really good on the game and at their jobs, they'll be really good to work with.

Graham Byrne (Head of Performance) and Sam Rice (Head of Medical) are here too who I've worked with before and get on great with so that's a big factor.

In order for us to have positive results, we wan't to create a positive environment for the staff and the players to work in, and I'm really excited for the challenge ahead.

I'm coming to a club with ambitions to do well, and ambition is the driver in everything I do. Stephen is an ambitious manager and if he's coming back into it at St Pat's, that's for a reason.

You can see the crowds here in Inchicore at every game and the work the club are doing, the training facilities, the squad, everything is being pushed to move forward and that's a massive factor in me coming here."

Manager Stephen kenny added:

"Brian has been immersed in the League of Ireland for the last 15 year or so, he's got a lot of experience, he's a passionate individual, he's very committed, he's a clear thinker on the game.

I feel Brian is a natural coach and his skillset will compliment Assistant Coach Sean O'Connor, Goalkeeping Coach Pat Jennings, and the rest of the support staff to help the players to continue to improve and reach their potential."

Director of Football Ger O'Brien has welcomed Brian Gartland to Richmond Park:

"I am delighted to welcome Brian to the football club, he is someone who has been involved in the League for a long time and understands what it takes to achieve success. Brian is a talented coach who will bring a specific skillset to Stephen's backroom staff and will be a fantastic addition to St Patrick's Athletic going forward."
