Saints Climb Back To Top After Rout In Sligo

Saint Patrick's Athletic returned to the top of the eircom League of Ireland this evening following a straightforward 4-0 win over Sligo Rovers at the Shogrounds. Rovers didn't do themselves many favours with the Saints listing a penalty and two own-goals on their score-sheet.

The deadlock was broken after 17 minutes when Gary O'Neill slotted home from the penalty spot after Dave Mulcahy had been brought down in the box.

It was 2-0 at the break following an own goal from Jamie McKenzie as he attempted to clear from Anthony Murphy's cross at the end of the first half.

It got worse for the Bit O' Red shortly after the break. Six minutes in, Sean Kelly could only slice a header past goalkeeper Richard Brush as he got caught underneath Murphy's long throw-in.

Already over as a contest, the scoring was complete on the hour as Dave Mulcahy got in on the act. After drifting past the static Sligo defence he fired home to make it 4-0 and lift the Saints ahead of Drogheda on goal-difference.
