UEFA Europa League Potential Opponents
The final qualifiers for the 2019/20 UEFA Europa League earned their place recently so we now know who will be seeded and all of our potential opponents.
Our UEFA ranking of 1.750 will mean we are unseeded for the First Qualifying Round. The draw will take place on June 18th with the games scheduled for July 11th and July 18th. As ever we stress that these dates will not be finalised until after the draw when clubs meet to agree the final arrangements!
On the day of the draw, clubs will be assigned into pots based on seeding and to ensure two teams from the same nation cannot face each other. Each team will be assigned a number (1-12). The draw procedure will see one seeded ball and unseeded ball taken. Then these two are mixed to see who plays at home first.
Seeded/unseeded does not mean a team will play first/second. The draw decides that. If the draw show that team 4 will play team 10, then all teams in each pot with those numbers will play each other. If effectively means the draw is pretty quick as each time numbers are paired, 16-20 teams find out their opponent.
The draw is not regionalised. They may be in regions but UEFA can move teams around to ensure that teams of a similar rating are in each pot. For example last year, Shamrock Rovers' possible opponents were from Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, Latvia and Belarus while Derry City could have faced teams from Belarus, Macedonia, Poland, Serbia and Montenegro.
