SAINTS & ROVERS TEN GOAL THRILLER

St. Patrick’s Athletic 5 v Shamrock Rovers 5. Another gutsy performance from the U11’s ensured that they got a share of the spoils against Dublin rivals Shamrock Rovers on Monday last.

Playing with a strong wind at their backs Rovers were dominant in the 1st half. It was no surprise that the Hoops took the lead in the 9th minute. It took some time for Pats to claw back the lead but Roy Coombes slotted home the equaliser for them in the 16th minute.

Rovers restored the lead straight from the re-start and Pats looked in trouble when the visitors scored again in the 25th minute. The half time break couldn’t come quick enough for the Saints as they were struggling against the wind but they were determined to keep playing their passing game.

Within 2 minutes of the restart Rossi Canavan played a one two with Eoghan Cullen and pulled a goal back and bring Pats back into the game at 3-2.

Pats were playing some attractive football which was rewarded when Roy Coombes grabbed his second goal of the game running straight through the Rovers defence to equalise.

Both touchlines couldn’t believe the game they were watching as the goals came thick and fast. With 8 minutes to go Rovers showed they were still a threat and grabbed a fourth goal. It was then Pats turn to score straight from the restart Eoghan Cullen got on the score-sheet with a fine piece of play down the left exchanging passes with Coombes before firing low and hard into the Rovers goal.

Rovers nicked a fifth goal with 4 minutes left on the clock but Pats fighting spirit saw them equalise right at the death to end a remarkable game - Rossi Canavan was the Saints equalising hero.
