St Patrick's Athletic are happy to announce the appointment of Martin Russell as assistant to Saints' manager Liam Buckley ahead of the 2014 season.
Russell has previously been at the club as both a player and coach, playing from 1998 till 2003, and remaining on the coaching staff till 2005.
Russell won the 1998/99 League of Ireland under the guidance of Buckley who signed the midfielder, while he also won the 2001 League Cup with the Saints – the club's first ever success in the competition.
Speaking about Russell's arrival, Buckley announced his delight at the arrival of the former Manchester United midfielder to the management team.
“Having previously worked with Martin, I am delighted to welcome him to my backroom staff. Martin was a great player and achieved a lot with UCD as a manager, and he will be a great addition to the coaching staff.”
In his time with the Students, Russell won the First Division title for the club in his first year, while he maintained UCD's Premier Division status in every season that followed before he left the club in the close season.
Russell has experience of working with current Saints' stars Ian Bermingham, Greg Bolger, and Conan Byrne at UCD, while Russell is a former teammate of both Keith Fahey and Brendan Clarke from his playing days with the Saints.
“I was delighted to be asked to join up with Liam and his coaching staff,” Russell told stpatsfc.com. “Having played under Liam as a player, I am really looking forward to working with him and a very talented squad.”
Russell will assist Buckley immediately, and will be part of the management staff for tonight's game against Ballinamallard United in the Setanta Sports Cup.
