The All Saints Show Goes To Warsaw
The All Saints Show goes to Warsaw – a view from the press box....
“Your technique is very good!!”.
These were the words of a surprised Polish journalist as we made our way into the lift to take advantage of the fine half-time spread provided in the Pepsi Arena last Wednesday and no he was not referring to the accuracy with which I placed my thumb on the down button of the elevator - he was genuinely surprised by how well our lads had played in the first 45 mins.
We were better than they anticipated - much better.
After 10 hours travelling via Berlin on the Monday Christy's goal was the pay-off, and what a pay-off. Pats holding possession then their right-full takes his eyes of Bermo for a second and he's gone, Faheys inch perfect pass and Christy does what he does best.
Cue utter joy and exhilaration.
That's the worst thing about being in the press-box you know, you can't (or shouldn't!!) celebrate but seeing the Pats fans go nuts was enough.
To be honest we could've been 2 up at half-time but let's not be picky!
Yeah we tired in the heat towards the end and conceded a late equaliser but we took on a team with a budget of around €50m and matched them, bettered them at times.
Their fans seemed to turn on them very early and those whistles from their support were music to our ears (wasn't that bouncy thing they do brilliant though???!?).
Looking down on from our seats in the press box near the halfway line we couldn't have been prouder of our team and the fans.
Never mind the TV coverage, our fans most definitely could be heard from first minute to last - a credit to the club as always especially after the terrible sadness earlier in the day (RIP Chris).
After the game we went to the media area for the press conference and to grab a quick interview with Liam and a few players.
As we approached Liam I went to shake his hand and got a bearhug (a Buckohug perhaps??!!!) and he ushered us down into the dressingroom area to a room Pats had been given the use of so we could conduct an interviews in peace.
The disappointment at conceding the late goal was clearly evident but there was also a sense of satisfaction that we'd given notice that Pats are never there just to make up the numbers.
As we left we picked up some extra programmes for people who'd requested them and had a chat with some of their media crew to thank them for all their hospitality. Again they told us how surprised they were at how well Pats played. We weren't....
